What are DNS records?

DNS records form an important foundation when making a website available for visitors. In the DNS settings of a domain name, the IP address of the web server is recorded, together with other crucial data such as the address of the mail server.

A visitor of a website first asks for the domain name. This domain name request is then connected through to the DNS server. The DNS server translates or converts the domain name into an IP address. The IP address of the website is then given back to the computer of the visitor. All further communication between the visitor and the website is continued through the IP address.

Also when sending an email to a domain name, the DNS server first looks at which of the domain name's mail servers the email needs to be sent to.
